Welcome to my website. I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Government and Justice Studies at Appalachian State University and Co-Director of the Correlates of War Project. My research primarily focuses on relationships between political leaders and interstate conflict, how governments pay for war, and state making processes. My work has been published in the American Political Science Review, Journal of Politics, International Studies Quarterly, Political Research Quarterly, and other outlets. I teach courses on interstate conflict, leaders in world politics, foreign policy, the politics of state making, and strategic choice in international relations.
